There’s no reason to believe he couldn’t have continued being successful with at least some stuff like that even though he was getting more experimental. Pet Sounds had a few big hits even though it was experimental, and his genius culminated from there with Good Vibrations, their biggest hit. Brian’s music was always successful while he was in charge. I think Love wrecked their commercial success not by limiting his ability to react to the latest trends, but by messing with Brian’s ability to do his own thing. My argument would be a bit different than the above commenter. Don't Go Near The Water and Student Demonstration Time were contributions to protest music in 1971, the latter could also be seen as Mike's take on the Rock 'n Roll revival, the California Saga was his reaction to Progressive Rock in 1973, and I think his contributions in the 80's and 90's speak for themselves. Mike, on the other hand was far more in line with the trends of the time. In 1977 Punk Rock exploded and everyone not involved with that was out discoing while Brian was playing around first with fart synths and later with big band arrangements. In 1973 everyone was hot about Hard and Progressive Rock while Brian was over in Holland writing a fairytale set to synthesizer experiments.
Pepper's while Brian was sitting at home recording lo-fi albums. In 1967 bands were putting out their answers to Sgt. In 1961 everything was still about Rock 'n Roll and Rockabilly and Brian introduced the world to Vocal Surf music. I don't think Brian ever followed any trends or changed accordingly to the landscape.
A lot of people say that the hate for Mike goes too far and I will agree that it is kind of low hanging fruit, but there’s a reason his fruit hangs so low: he’s just kind of a jackass sometimes.īrian saw a changing landscape and thought the band needed to change things up accordingly. Overall he just kind of gives the band a bad look and I totally understand why Brian would want to separate himself from that. Mike of course was a very heavy contributor and there are moments where he had some good ideas of course, but to take that name and then play as “the Beach Boys” at Trump rallies just seems shitty to me. The cherry on top is that Mike somehow got the rights to the name “the Beach Boys,” despite Brian being the musical genius in most fans’ opinions. He straight up interrupts Brian’s heartfelt speech by boasting about how they’re better than the Beatles. His rock and roll hall of fame speech is a notable example. He also has kind of an arrogant and prude stage persona which can be kind of cringy. He specifically spoke out against drug references and experimental pop ideas, two things that the Beatles successfully implemented into their music which actually brought them more acclaim.
He didn’t necessarily bash the music itself, but would dismiss it as being “not right for the band.” Ultimately his dismissal of a lot of progressive musical and lyrical ideas definitely didn’t help the band keep with the changing tides of the 60s. Most people dislike him for his interference with Brian’s artistic vision.
